Compared to individual therapy, therapy with a couple or family demands a different skillset that requires practice, training, and a bit of a knack for it. My training includes an M.A. in Marriage & Family Therapy, and I have narrowed my focus in couples and sex therapy, and therapy with families.
Most therapy models are problem-focused, which means the therapy discussion often develops language around what is going wrong, and trying to find the root of the problem.
Solution-Focused Brief Therapy is about developing language, and wiring your brain to notice what is going right, and then amplifying it. We don't necessarily need to know the root of the problem, since the 'problem' is usually not one, singular thing, but instead can be multi-factored and complex, because us humans and our relationships are complex!
The main idea of Solution-Focused therapy is describing what you prefer to be happening instead of the problem, known as the "desired outcome" or "preferred future". It is a simple, elegant, and respectful approach to therapy which begins from the first session to help you be more creative and hopeful about overcoming your challenges. There is a mountain of evidence-based studies supporting Solution-Focused Brief Therapy as an effective model, and often yields results in fewer sessions (hence the 'brief' part of the name).
